Belt vs Chain Drive Circular Conveyor 17/09/2026 FAQ / FAQ About Circular Conveyors / FAQ About Circular Motion 61 ViewsBelt vs Chain Drive Circular Conveyor: which solution suits your project best?Author: ShanGong | 17th,Sept 2026| Category: Library-FAQ — FAQ about Circular MotionBoth drive types are offered across our circular conveyor range, on the same guideways, with the same carriers and the same positioning mechanisms. The choice between them changes three things: repeat positioning accuracy, noise and smoothness, and what maintenance looks like. The accuracy difference is the one that surprises people, so it goes first.Chain is the more accurate of the two in Belt vs Chain Drive Circular ConveyorWith a positioning mechanism, chain drive repeats to ±0.03 mm and timing belt to ±0.05 mm. Without a positioning mechanism, both sit at ±0.5 mm.This runs against the usual intuition that a toothed belt is the precision option. On a linear axis it often is. On a circular conveyor with a positioning mechanism, chain repeats better. The practical reading: if the specification is ±0.03 mm, it is a chain-drive specification. Quoting ±0.03 mm on a belt-driven line is an over-claim.[Circular Conveyor Positioning Accuracy]Where timing belt winsNoise. A belt runs markedly quieter than a chain. In a cell with operators alongside it, or in a plant working to a noise target, this is often the deciding factor on its own.Smoothness. Belt drive produces less cyclic variation during travel, which matters for open containers, liquids, unsecured workpieces, or anything that can shift in its nest.Cleanliness. A belt runs dry. A chain needs lubrication, and lubricated chain in a food, pharmaceutical or cleanroom environment brings containment requirements a belt does not.Maintenance simplicity. Belt tension is checked and adjusted; there is no lubrication schedule for the drive element itself. Where chain winsAccuracy. ±0.03 mm against ±0.05 mm with a positioning mechanism.Load. Chain carries higher drive loads without the elongation a belt develops under sustained tension, which is why it is the drive on our modular lines at the upper end of the payload range. The published figure for each series is on the individual drive product pages.Position consistency around the loop. Positive engagement link by link means the relationship between drive rotation and carrier position does not depend on tension.Long straight sections. Belt compliance scales with free span. On a long loop the accuracy penalty grows; a chain’s does not.Duty. Chain tolerates high-cycle, high-load running over long service periods, provided the lubrication schedule is kept. A quick decision route in Belt vs Chain Drive Circular ConveyorIs the accuracy requirement ±0.03 mm? → Chain. The decision is made.Is the environment food, pharmaceutical or cleanroom? → Belt, unless the accuracy requirement overrides it and lubricant containment can be engineered. Is the payload above roughly 20 kg per carrier? → Chain. Is noise a stated constraint? → Belt. Are the straight runs long? → Chain.None of the above? → Belt. It is quieter, simpler to maintain, and ±0.05 mm covers most assembly processes. The third optionLink drive is neither. It uses a linkage with a cam-profiled motion, which removes the centrifugal reaction a wheel-driven carrier experiences at the arcs and gives an index with no impact — the right answer for impact-sensitive products, close carrier pitch and vertical mounting. Its payload ceiling is lower than either belt or chain. [Link Drive Circular Conveyor]The environment decides more often than the accuracy doesOn most enquiries the accuracy requirement sits at ±0.05 mm or looser, which both drives meet. What then settles the choice is the room the line stands in.A chain needs lubricant on the drive element, and lubricant in a food, pharmaceutical or cleanroom environment brings containment, cleaning and validation questions that belong to the plant rather than to the conveyor. A belt runs dry and asks none of them. In the other direction, a cell with swarf, grinding dust or coolant is hard on a belt’s tooth engagement and forgiving of a chain, and a plant working to a noise target will hear the difference between them from across the room. The order to settle these in is: environment first, then accuracy, then payload. Taking them the other way round produces lines that meet a number and cannot be cleaned. What changes in the maintenance planBoth drives are inspected rather than serviced on a fixed schedule, and the guideway lubrication regime is the same either way — that part belongs to the rails, not to the drive, and it is set out on [Circular Guide Rail Lubrication].What differs is the drive element itself. A belt is checked for tension and for tooth condition, and it has no lubrication task of its own. A chain is checked for tension and elongation and does have one, along with somewhere for the lubricant to go and not spread. Neither is demanding. The question worth asking before choosing is not which is less work but which kind of work the plant already does.RelatedCircular Conveyor SystemsBelt Driven Circular ConveyorCircular Chain Driven ConveyorFrequently asked questions about Belt vs Chain Drive Circular ConveyorCan an existing line be converted from belt to chain later?Treat it as a rebuild rather than a conversion. The drive element, the drive unit, the carrier attachments and usually the tensioning arrangement all change together, and the accuracy gain only appears if the positioning mechanisms are matched to it. Where a line is being changed because the accuracy requirement moved, it is worth checking first whether the requirement is at the carrier or at the workpiece — a nest that lets the part move is not fixed by changing the drive.Does a timing belt lose accuracy as it ages?Belt tension does change over service life, and tension is part of what the drive holds against the stop. In practice the positioning mechanism still pulls the carrier onto its datum, so the effect shows as a slow drift in behaviour rather than as a step change in the figure, and it is why belt lines carry a tension check in their inspection routine. If a process cannot tolerate any drift between maintenance intervals, that is a reason to specify chain rather than a reason to shorten the interval. Can chain noise be brought down? Some of it. Enclosure helps, keeping the lubrication regime helps because a dry chain is a loud one, and running the loop below its maximum speed helps most of all, since noise rises with speed rather than with load. What no measure removes is the character of the sound — it is metal engaging metal, which carries through a workshop differently from a belt’s hum. Where an operator stands beside the machine all shift, specify belt unless accuracy or payload rules it out.Which drive suits a vertically mounted loop?Vertical mounting puts gravity into the carrier’s weaker direction and leaves the drive holding the unbalanced weight of the carriers on one side of the loop. Chain’s positive engagement is well suited to that, and link drive — the cam-profiled linkage drive, called connecting rod drive in older catalogues — was designed for it, with close carrier spacing and no impact at index. A belt can be used vertically, but it is the option to justify rather than assume. How late can we change our mind? Before the technical specification confirmation form is signed. The drive type sets the drive unit, the carrier attachment and part of the frame, so it is not a component swap at build stage. If the choice genuinely hangs on something you will not know until later — a noise measurement, a cleaning regime the customer has yet to define — say so at enquiry, and the layout can be developed in a way that keeps both open for longer.
