How We Handle An Inquiry About Cartesian Linear Gantry System?

Cartesian Linear Gantry System is a computer-controlled, electromechanical positioning platform that operationalizes orthogonal XYZ coordinate geometry. Its architecture employs three linear axes of motion, each typically driven by a rotary servo or stepper motor coupled with a precision transmission mechanism, such as a ballscrew or rack-and-pinion, and guided by linear bearings or profiled rail systems.

The Cartesian Linear Gantry System’s kinematic structure is arranged in a stacked or bridge configuration, where each axis is mechanically serial; motion in one axis physically carries the subsequent axes and the end-effector. Positional feedback is achieved via incremental or absolute encoders, enabling closed-loop servo control for high precision and repeatability. A central motion controller coordinates synchronized multi-axis interpolation to execute complex toolpaths. This open-architecture design provides high stiffness, and scalability for heavy payloads, while its non-articulated kinematics simplifies mathematical modeling for precise, vibration-resistant point-to-point and continuous-path motion control in pick-and-place, machining, and 3D printing.

Dear TALLMAN Team,

Based on your product portfolio, we would like to request a technical review and a price quotation for a custom configuration of a Cartesian linear gantry system.

This system will be used as a rack-mounted storage retriever. We require the delivery of a barebone mechanical assembly only (WITHOUT motors, gearboxes, or any connecting synchronization shafts). We will integrate our own drives and electronics.

Technical Specifications & Requirements:

·         Configuration: 2x horizontal guide rails (X-axis) carrying 2x parallel vertical columns (Y-axis).

·         Inner Clearance: The clear distance between the inner faces of the two vertical columns must be exactly 600 mm (clearance/inner width, as the final center-to-center distance will depend on your selected profile size).

·         Payload: 60 kg (including our vertical carriage, telescopic extractor, and the loaded box). The center of gravity is considered ideal/centered in the X-axis for moment calculations.

·         Horizontal Axis (X): Length approx. 2600 mm, required max. velocity 3 m/s.

·         Vertical Axis (Y): Length approx. 1900 mm, required max. velocity 1 m/s.

Since this system will be mounted vertically on a rack wall, please ensure the internal linear guide blocks and profiles are sized appropriately to handle the resulting radial forces and dynamic tilting moments ($M_x, M_y, M_z$) at the specified velocities.

Documentation, Commercial Terms & CAD Request:

·         Please provide the official technical drawings and the 3D CAD models (STEP format preferred) of the proposed configuration so we can integrate them into our master 3D model.

·         Please include the estimated price, manufacturing lead time, and shipping terms to the Czech Republic.

Please find attached our drawing documentation showing the layout, dimensions, and movement speeds.

We look forward to your feasibility feedback and technical proposal.

Dear Jack,

Thank you for your quick response. Please find attached the filled selection guide spreadsheet with our basic technical data for this Cartesian Linear Gantry System.

To ensure your engineering team has the right context for the calculation, please note the following crucial details regarding our architecture:

1.    Orientation change: Unlike your standard horizontal gantry configuration shown in the guide, this system will be mounted vertically flat against a rack wall (in the YX plane).

2.    X1 and X2 Axes: These are the two horizontal guide rails mounted to the rack. The vertical columns (Y-axis) will travel along them.

3.    Y-Axis Configuration: We require two parallel vertical columns (as shown in our previous drawing). The inner clearance width between these two vertical profiles must be exactly 600 mm.

4.    Z-Axis (Cantilever): The Z-axis listed in the table represents our own custom telescopic extractor. The 60 kg payload will create a heavy dynamic tilting moment ($M_x$) when extended out into the rack. Please ensure the internal linear blocks of your profiles can handle this moment at the requested speeds.

5.    Barebone only: As stated, we do not require motors, drivers, or synchronization shafts. We need the purely mechanical configuration (barebone profiles with internal carriages/belts).

Please let me know if your engineering department requires any further details to proceed with the 3D STEP files and the commercial quotation.

Dear Jack,

In addition to the previous “Selection Guide” datasheet I have sent you, could your engineering team please also prepare an alternative technical and commercial proposal for our Cartesian Linear Gantry System?

We would like to compare our original heavy-duty requirements with a more standard, lower-specification option (Option B) to evaluate the cost and weight savings.

Please calculate Option B with the following parameters:

·         Configuration & Dimensions: (Same layout) 2x horizontal X-axes, 2x vertical Y-axes. Inner clearance width between vertical columns remains exactly 600 mm. X-axis length 2600 mm, Y-axis height 1900 mm.

·         Reduced Payload: 30 kg total (instead of 60 kg).

·         Reduced X-axis Velocity: Max. 1.5 m/s (instead of 3.0 m/s).

·         Reduced Y-axis Velocity: Max. 0.5 m/s (instead of 1.0 m/s).

What we need for both options (60kg high-speed vs 30kg standard-speed):

1.     Indicative price quote (EXW).

2.     Estimated net weight of the mechanical assemblies.

3.     3D STEP files / technical drawings for our verification.

This will help us make a final decision on which path to take for our prototype. Thank you for your support.

Custom Cartesian Linear System

Client

Dear Jack,Thank you for the detailed quotation and the technical data. The proposed TMG220C/TMG170C system is very robust, but the total weight (over 400 kg) and the price are currently too high for our rack structure.

As mentioned before, we are in an experimental prototyping phase where we are strictly focusing on minimizing the weight and cost of the gantry system. We are fine with reducing the speeds and payloads to achieve a lighter design for this Cartesian Linear Gantry System.

We have optimized our application layout and built a new 3D master layout model. Please find the new assembly attached as a .step file.

We want your engineering team to use this new 3D layout as the benchmark. Please completely disregard the previous heavy rack & pinion modules and instead select lighter, more cost-effective belt-driven or smaller alternative modules from your catalog that match this exact geometry.

Based on this new attached STEP file, please provide:

1.     Technical Limits: The maximum payload and speed capacity calculated for the newly selected smaller profiles.

2.     Mounting Consultation: Your recommended design for the custom connecting brackets/plates between the X and Y axes.

3.     Updated Quote: A revised price quotation (EXW) and lead time for this lighter

4.     mechanical barebone setup.

5.     Best regards,
