CNC Lathe Gantry Loader :Overhead loading and unloading for one lathe, a pair of lathes or a full line

A CNC lathe gantry loader runs on a beam above the machine and takes over the part change. It picks a blank from the part station, loads the chuck, takes the finished part out and sets it down. Because it works from overhead, the front of the lathe stays open for setting up and measuring.

TallMan Robotics builds the CNC lathe gantry loader in four forms. They are a standard single-machine unit, a one-to-two unit shared by two lathes, a three-axis ram-type unit, and custom systems for a row of lathes. The standard single-machine and one-to-two loaders are capable of a 7-second cycle. Both run at up to 2 m/s with ±0.05 mm repeatability.

Choose a CNC lathe gantry loader by the number of lathes

Standard single-machine lathe loader

One loader serves one lathe. The beam stands on a column beside the machine and reaches a part station next to it, with X travel up to 3 m. This is the standard machine the range was built around, and it is the usual starting point for a single turning cell.

One-to-two lathe loader

one to two CNC lathe gantry loader serving two lathes from a shared part station

One-to-two loader with a shared part station between two lathes.

Two lathes stand side by side with a shared part station between them, and one loader serves both. X travel extends up to 6 m to cover both chucks. The unit carries the same 7-second cycle rating and 2 m/s speed as the single-machine loader.

Ram-type three-axis lathe loader

ram type three axis lathe gantry loader with H section column

Ram-type three-axis loader on an H-section column.

A short Y ram on the X carriage adds a third axis. The gripper can then move across the machine as well as along the beam and down to the chuck. An H-section main column supplies the stiffness that a third axis working at speed needs.

Custom loaders for a line of lathes

custom CNC lathe gantry loader system for a line of lathes

Custom loading system running along a line of lathes.

For a row of machines, the loader is designed around the plant layout. The example runs two overhead beams along a line of lathes, so several machines are loaded and unloaded at the same time.

The loading gripper for CNC Lathe Gantry Loader

pneumatic 90 degree double gripper for CNC lathe loading and unloadingPneumatic lathe loading gripper with two heads at 90°.

Loading is done by a pneumatic double gripper whose two heads sit at right angles. One trip to the chuck is enough to swap a machined part for a blank, and the swap takes 0.3–0.6 s. Part weight limits and the gripper’s alignment and chip-clearing functions are covered in the configuration guide.

Where a CNC lathe gantry loader fits

The loaders are designed for CNC lathes and also serve CNC grinders and other automated machines that need parts loaded and unloaded. They suit repeat production, where the same part runs through the cell for long periods. The operator’s time then goes on setting and inspection. For welding, palletizing and heavy handling, see the truss manipulator range.

What we need to quote a CNC Lathe Gantry Loader

Start with a layout drawing or photos that show the lathes, the spacing between them and where parts will be staged. Then describe the part: its name, shape, dimensions and weight, and whether it has to be turned over between operations. From there our engineers choose the layout, the axis lengths and the gripper, and send back a configuration you can check against your cell.

The lathe gantry loader configuration guide on techman-robotics.com shows how the layouts are coded and how cycle time builds up for each one.

FAQ

Is the loader only for lathes?

No. The same loaders serve CNC grinders and other automated equipment that needs parts loaded and unloaded.

Can one system serve a whole row of lathes?

Yes. Custom loaders link several lathes so that they are loaded and unloaded at the same time, with the layout designed around your machines.

Can the loader turn a part over between operations?

Yes. A rotation axis can be added to the loader when the part has to be turned. Tell us which faces are machined in each operation.
