FAQs about Index drives

What does a DE Index Drive do?

It converts continuous input rotation into discrete output steps. One input revolution advances the output by one fixed angle.

How does the dual eccentric cam reduce backlash?

Two cam followers contact the star wheel slot from opposite sides. This eliminates clearance at the dwell position. The detent roller then locks the wheel.

What index angles can I get?

Star wheels come with 4, 6, 8, 12, or 24 teeth. A 24-tooth wheel gives 15 degrees per index. A 4-tooth wheel gives 90 degrees.

How to calibrate the phase difference of the double eccentric cam on site?

Loosen the locking nut between the two cams. Rotate one of the cam bushings so that both cam followers make contact with both sides of the star groove simultaneously. Use a dial gauge to measure the amount of swing when the star wheel stops. Lock the nut when the swing is less than 0.02 mm.

How to measure the actual indexing error of the output flange?

Install the encoder directly onto the center hole of the output flange. Manually rotate the input shaft for 10 complete cycles. Record the angle value at each stop of the encoder. Calculate the difference between the theoretical and computational perspectives. When the difference exceeds ± 0.05 degrees, the star wheel needs to be replaced.
