Linear Motion Blocks, also called a carriage or guide block, are the moving component in a profiled rail linear guide system. It mates with a stationary rail to provide precise, low-friction linear motion via recirculating rolling elements. The block’s internal structure includes a carriage body, a ball circulation loop, ball retainers, end caps, dust seals, and a lubrication system. As the block travels, rolling elements (balls or rollers) enter a load zone between the block and rail raceways.

How do I select the correct preload level for a guide block assembly?

Preload removes internal clearance to increase rigidity. Choose light preload (C0–C1) for general automation, medium (C2) for single-axis pick-and-place, and heavy (C3) for CNC machine tools with reversing loads. However, oversized preload can reduce travel smoothness.

What accuracy grades are available for precision linear carriages?

Common grades: N (normal), H (high), P (precision), SP (super precision), UP (ultra precision). Running parallelism tolerances range from ±10 µm/100 mm (N) down to ±1 µm/100 mm (UP). Grade affects block-to-rail height variation and side face parallelism.

Can I mount a recirculating ball guide vertically?

Yes, but vertical mounting requires additional consideration for ball recirculation. Use end seals with stronger retention force and specify a block with a ball-retention cage to prevent balls from falling out during assembly. Preload may need adjustment.
