A planetary gearbox, also known as an epicyclic gearbox, is a type of gear system commonly used in various mechanical and industrial applications. It consists of three main components: a sun gear, planet gears, and a ring gear.

The sun gear is located at the center and is usually driven by an input shaft. The planet gears, which are smaller in size, surround the sun gear and are mounted on a carrier. The ring gear, which is the largest gear, surrounds the planet gears and is fixed to the gearbox housing.

The planetary gearbox operates by transmitting torque and speed between the input and output shafts. When the sun gear rotates, it drives the planet gears, which, in turn, rotate around the sun gear while also rotating on their own axis. This causes the planet gears to engage with the ring gear, resulting in the transmission of torque.

The advantage of a planetary gearbox is that it can achieve high gear ratios in a compact design. By varying the arrangement of the gears and the speed of the input and output shafts, different gear ratios can be obtained. Additionally, planetary gearboxes offer high efficiency, low backlash, and the ability to handle high torque loads.
