Two Axis Gantry

Two Axis Gantry consists of a primary axis X supporting a secondary axis Y perpendicular to it. The X axis base rail anchors to a fixed structure. A beam spans across the X axis carriage. The Y axis module mounts along this beam. Each axis uses a linear guide, drive mechanism, and position feedback. Control system coordinates both axes for planar motion.

1. What is the difference between two axis gantry and XY table?
   A two axis gantry has a moving beam spanning across the work area. An XY table stacks one axis directly on top of the other. Gantry offers better access from three sides. XY table provides higher stiffness but blocks front access.
2. How do I square the Y axis to X axis?
   Place a granite square on the base. Sweep Y axis with a dial indicator along X travel. Adjust Y rail mounting until indicator shows less than 0.02 mm over full length. Lock rails permanently.
3. How do I protect a two axis gantry from dust?
   Install bellows covers on both axes. Use wiper seals on carriages. For wood dust, add a vacuum hose near the tool. Fully enclose gantry for fine dust. Clean seals weekly.
4. Can I mount a two axis gantry vertically?
   Yes, but add brakes on both axes. Ballscrew axes need spring-applied brakes. Belt drives cannot hold vertical loads. Use rack and pinion with brake for vertical. Never mount standard belt gantry vertically.
5. What calibration removes gantry skew?
   Create a grid of target points. Measure actual position with a dial indicator. Build a compensation table in the controller. Apply corrections during motion. Calibrate after any crash or rail replacement.
6. How do I synchronize dual X motors on long span?
   Use one master motor driving a rigid shaft to both sides. Or use two motors with electronic gearing. Mechanical shaft guarantees perfect synchronization. Electronic gearing requires high resolution encoders.
