Two axis cantilever manipulator can be understood as XY Gantry Robots,X/Y Gantry Systems. The X axis cantilever extends, and the X axis is installed on the Y axis slide. The most commonly used combination structure of ‎X/Y Gantry Systems is suitable for the handling, taking and placing, positioning and other functions of workpieces.

An XY gantry robot arranges two linear axes orthogonally. The lower axis (X) carries the upper axis (Y). Each axis uses a linear module with ballscrew, belt, or rack drive. The Y axis carriage holds an end effector. Axes mount to a rigid granite or aluminum base.

What are XY Gantry Robots?

XY Gantry Robots are a type of advanced robotic system used for advanced automated manufacturing. Unlike traditional robots, these gantry robots are able to move swiftly and accurately in both the X and Y directions. Instead of relying on just an arm and a turning wheel, as is common with traditional robots, these highly advanced robots feature two linked arms with powerful precision motors, capable of fantastic speeds and accuracy. Gantry robots provide far greater maneuverability and range, and can be programmed to do an almost limitless number of tasks, with the only limitation being the size of the robot itself. Tallman Robotics is a leading manufacturer of XY Gantry Robots, with their robots featuring state-of-the-art technology and engineering. Utilizing the latest technologies, Tallman Robotics’ robots are capable of amazing speeds and impeccable precision.

PMC runs a comprehensive manufacturing test sequence. Every unit passes inspection before release.

TallMan Robotics establishes its own testing lab and inspection systems for consistent quality control in module production.

Model Selection Guide of XY Gantry Robots or ‎X/Y Gantry Systems :

When selecting a multi axis combined manipulator, follow the following selection steps:
1: Check the combination style of X/Y Gantry Robots according to the customer’s requirements.
2: Check the weight of the load to be handled.
3: Check the working stroke of each shaft.
4: Check the repeated positioning accuracy and moving speed of each axis.
5: Check the type and power (or torque value) of each shaft motor.
6: Check the specifications of each shaft and the motor installation style.
7: Check the layout scheme of wiring duct and specifications of drag chain.
8: Consideration and verification of other special working conditions.
9: Check the final model and confirm the 2D/3D CAD drawing of X/Y Gantry Robots.

FAQs about XY Gantry Robots

  1. How does an XY gantry robot differ from a Cartesian robot?
An XY gantry has two moving axes. A Cartesian robot adds a third Z axis. XY gantry handles flat surfaces like dispensing or pick place. Cartesian handles 3D tasks like assembly or stacking.
  2. What drive type gives highest accuracy for XY gantry?
Ballscrew drives achieve ±0.005 mm repeatability. Linear motors reach ±0.001 mm but cost more. Belt drives give ±0.05 mm. Choose ballscrew for precision dispensing or light milling.
  3. Can I add a Z axis later to my XY gantry?
Yes, mount a Z axis module onto the Y carriage. Z axis adds 100 mm to 500 mm stroke. Update controller software to manage three axes. Ensure Y axis motor handles the extra weight.
  4. How do I square XY axes perfectly?
Use a granite square and a dial indicator. Sweep the Y axis along X travel. Adjust X rail mounting until deviation stays under 0.01 mm per meter. Then bolt rails permanently. Unsquared axes create parallelogram errors.
  5. What controller works best for XY gantry coordination?
Use a dedicated motion controller with circular and linear interpolation. Example: ACS, Trionics, or Galil. Avoid independent axis controllers. They cannot coordinate diagonal lines or curves. PLC-based control works only for point to point.
